Making Every Guest Feel at Home: Our New Social Story
At Sunnyside Guest House, we want every guest to feel comfortable, relaxed, and welcome. We understand that for some people with autism, new places and unfamiliar routines can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why we have created a new resource to help: a Social Story for checking in at Sunnyside.
What is a Social Story?
A Social Story is a clear, step-by-step guide with photos and symbols that explains what will happen during a stay. Our Social Story shows:
- What Sunnyside looks like from the outside
- How to check in at reception
- Meeting Anthony and Larissa, who run Sunnyside
- Going up the stairs to your room
- What breakfast time is like
- How to check out when it is time to leave
By providing this information in advance, guests can feel reassured and know exactly what to expect before arrival.
Extra Support for Guests with Autism
We have also implemented other measures to make a stay at Sunnyside as comfortable as possible:
- Quiet Time Breakfasts
Guests can request an early or late breakfast slot for a quieter, calmer experience if the dining room is busy. - Clear Information
Simple instructions are provided in rooms for Wi-Fi, television, heating, and showers, reducing stress for guests. - Sensory Comforts
Extras such as soft throws, quieter spaces, and rooms for private time are available if needed. - Choice and Flexibility
Flexible check-in and check-out times are offered where possible, recognising that each guest has different needs. - A Warm Welcome
Anthony and Larissa are always happy to answer questions in advance, so guests feel prepared and supported from the very beginning.
