Sustainable Travel to Southport Attractions and Events

We’ve recently created travel guides for various attractions and events to help our guests explore the area sustainably while staying at Sunnyside Guest House.

Each guide provides an overview of different transport options, assessing their carbon footprint, sustainability rating, and approximate travel times. Public transport routes also include links to up-to-date timetables to make your journey as seamless as possible. In addition, we have also provided accessibility information for each event and attraction, including the accessibility of the different methods of travel.

Travel Choices and Their Impact on Your Carbon Footprint

Here’s the table comparing the carbon footprints, grades, and travel times for a return journey from Sunnyside Guest House (PR9 0DP) to Crosby Beach (L23 6SX):

*Please note the grading system reflects not only the carbon footprint but also the overall efficiency, sustainability, and impact of each mode of transport. As an example the electric car (2 people traveling) has a lower sustainability grade compared to the train despite having a lower carbon footprint per person because the electric car has a limited capacity, variability in electricity sources, and less overall operational efficiency compared to trains.

Transport Links / Additional Information

Cycle Paths: There are cycle paths along some sections of the route, particularly near Crosby Beach. The route is mostly on-road with some designated cycling lanes and quieter roads. Some variable surfaces may be encountered.

Train: Merseyrail Northern Line from Southport to Blundellsands & Crosby station. The walk to the Anthony Gormley statues is 10 minutes. The service is direct and runs every 15 minutes from Southport train station on a normal service. Merseyrail Timetable avaiable here.

Roads: Via A565, a major road connecting Southport to Crosby. The route is straightforward with clear signage.

Bus: Arriva Bus Service 47 from Southport, Eastbank Street to Crosby, Oxford Road. From the bus stop, it’s a short walk to Crosby Beach. Arriva Timetables Click on the links for bus timetables.

Accessability Information

Crosby Beach General: Crosby Beach has limited accessibility for wheelchair users and can be challenging for those with mobility issues. While a slipway provides access to the sand, the majority of the beach is sandy, making it difficult to navigate in a wheelchair. The beach does have disabled toilets available.

Car: There is disabled parking at the beach along wth a paid for accessible toilet.

Cycle Paths: Overall, cycling from Southport to Crosby Beach is a pleasant journey with a mix of dedicated cycle paths, quieter roads, and scenic routes that cater well to cyclists looking for a coastal ride.

Train: Step free access is available from both Southport and Blundel Sands and Crosby. They also both have accessible toilets, a height-adjusted ticket office counter, an induction loop, accessible toilets, and waiting areas.
