At Sunnyside Guest House, we always look forward to hosting Alan and Pearl. They’ve become more than just guests over the years, they’re truly an inspiration to us and everyone who meets them. Despite Alan being visually impaired and Pearl having mobility issues, they never let these challenges stop them from having the best of times. Alan and Pearl have always loved visiting Southport, especially the Southport Flower Show, which holds a special place in their hearts. Over the years, they’ve created countless cherished memories in this beautiful seaside town, and we’re honoured that Sunnyside has become their favourite home away from home. This year was particularly special; Alan’s 90th birthday coincided with the 100th year of the Southport Flower Show.
To celebrate, they spent five unforgettable days here, revisiting old favourites
and making new memories together. We wanted to share their story of what can be done in Southport over four days, showcasing how much fun and adventure this wonderful town has to offer, no matter your age or challenges. We were delighted to be part of such a momentous occasion.
Day 1: Arrival in Southport
Alan and Pearl arrived at Sunnyside Guest House, excited for Alan’s milestone birthday adventure. As always Alan was especially thrilled to discover that Larissa had baked a fresh batch of her famous cupcakes. Alan is a big fan of Larissa’s baking, and he couldn’t resist enjoying one with a cup of tea before settling into their cosy room.
After getting comfortable, they decided to head out for dinner at their favourite spot, The Windmill Pub. Located just a 5-minute walk (0.2 miles) from Sunnyside, The Windmill is a perfect choice for Alan and Pearl. Its step-free access and accessible toilet make it easy for Pearl to navigate, and the welcoming atmosphere, delicious food, and warm hospitality made it the perfect start to their special trip.
Day 2: Alan’s Birthday Celebration and the Southport Flower Show
- Morning: Alan’s birthday started with a heartwarming moment as Baby Margot, the youngest member of the Sunnyside Guest House family, wished him a happy birthday with a big smile. This sweet gesture brought even more joy to Alan’s special day. During breakfast, while Alan and Pearl enjoyed their meal, Anthony decorated his bedroom with a bright birthday banner. When Alan returned to his room after breakfast, he was delighted by the decorations, making him feel truly celebrated.
- After breakfast: Alan and Pearl then headed out to the Southport Flower Show, which was celebrating its 100th year, an ideal way to mark Alan’s milestone birthday. The weather was perfect, with sunshine illuminating the vibrant displays of flowers and intricate garden designs. For Alan, who is visually impaired, the experience was particularly special. He thoroughly enjoyed the rich scents of the flowers that filled the air, allowing him to connect with the beauty of the show in his own unique way. The day was filled with colour, fragrance, and life, making it an unforgettable birthday celebration.
Day 3: Day Trip to Liverpool
- Alan and Pearl were in the mood for adventure, so they set off on a day trip to Liverpool. They bought a combination ticket for the train and ferry, making their journey seamless and exciting. The 45 minute train ride was scenic and relaxing, and once they arrived in Liverpool, they hopped on a ferry for a breezy cruise along the River Mersey. The fresh air and stunning views of the city brought smiles to their faces.
Day 4: Southport Fairground
- Alan and Pearl were both buzzing with excitement as they headed to the Southport Fairground, one of Alan’s all-time favourite places. Despite turning 90, Alan’s adventurous spirit remains as vibrant as ever. The fairground, with its lively atmosphere and array of thrilling rides, was the perfect place for Alan to embrace his love for excitement. Pearl was right there by his side as he enjoyed some of the wildest white-knuckle rides. They laughed together, feeling like kids again amidst the fairground’s vibrant energy.
Day 5: Southport Botanical Gardens and Penny Arcades
- Morning: After a week filled with excitement and adventure, Alan decided to take a well-deserved break on the final day of their birthday trip. He began by enjoying a relaxing sit in the sun at Sunnyside Guest House, savouring a few peaceful moments before joining Pearl and the family for the day’s activities. They started their outing with a visit to the Southport Botanical Gardens. Pearl and the family strolled hand-in-hand through the lush, tranquil surroundings, taking in the vibrant flowers and greenery. They also visited the aviary, where Pearl and the family delighted in feeding the birds, and explored the Palm House, marvelling at the exotic plants and warm atmosphere. Alan joined them for part of the visit, enjoying the serene environment and the beauty of the gardens.
- Afternoon: After their calming morning at the gardens, Pearl and the family headed to the Penny Arcades on Nevill Street for some light-hearted fun. They played nostalgic arcade games, won small prizes, and shared plenty of laughter. The classic games and playful atmosphere of the arcades evoked fond memories and added a joyful touch to their afternoon.
- Evening: For their final evening in Southport, Pearl and the family returned to The Windmill Pub. The familiar warmth and welcoming atmosphere of the pub provided the perfect setting for reflecting on their incredible week. As they enjoyed their final meal together, they reminisced about their adventures—from the thrills of the fairground to the beauty of the flower show and the fun at the arcades. Surrounded by good food and cherished company, they celebrated a trip filled with adventure, joy, and love.

As hosts, Anthony and Larissa find immense joy in their work. It’s families like Alan and Pearl who make every moment rewarding. Hosting wonderful guests and playing a part in creating memories that will last a lifetime in their beautiful hometown of Southport is what makes their job so special. Seeing guests leave with smiles and cherished memories is why Anthony and Larissa love what they do.
