Eating out in Southport
We’ve compiled this guide to assist our guests with dining options during their stay at the Sunnyside. Most of the restaurants listed are conveniently located within walking distance, and many of our previous guests have enjoyed dining at them.
For your convenience, we’ve included contact numbers for each restaurant, allowing you to make reservations directly. Should you require assistance with making reservations, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
Pub Food
The Windmill is a locally run and owned independent pub that is very popular with our regular guests. Not only is it just a 2-minute walk around the corner they provide a 25% discount off food to our guests when you show a discount card that’s available from reception. Their Sunday dinners are very popular and booking in advance is recommended. Please note they stop serving food at 7 pm and the discount card must be shown at the till when placing the order. Italian Restaurants
Volare is owned and run by Onofrio from Sicily who opened the restaurant in 2007. Due to its popularity, the restaurant expanded in 2023, taking over the neighboring shop and undergoing a full refurbishment at the same time.
The restaurant can be found around the corner on Lord Street around a 5-minute walk away. Some of our guests have found the tables a little close together so if you get a little claustrophobic this is not the place for you. The Restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Chip Shop
The Swan recently came 9th in National Geographic’s quest to find the UK’s best chip shop. Here is what they had to say:
“Southport’s oldest fish and chip restaurant has been run by the Defty family for 45 years. Fish and potatoes are locally sourced where possible and, while the menu lacks modern curveballs, it does the classics well enough to have inspired passions across the town. And at very moderate prices too.”

French
Bistrot Verite is an independent French restaurant in Birkdale Village, just over half an hour’s walk away. Although it’s quite a distance away I have included this restaurant in the list because of its fantastic reputation and food. The restaurant has been included in the Michelin Guide for several years. The guide describes the restaurant as:
“A friendly, bustling neighbourhood bistro, serving gutsy French dishes with a classic base, punchy flavours and the occasional international touch. It’s a family affair with Mum Michaela, Dad Marc and their sons all involved, either in the kitchen or front of house. Pop into their next-door bar, Petite Vérité, for pre or post-dinner drinks.”

Steak
The Feather Blade is located on Lord Street with views looking out towards The Monument. Its just a 5 minutes walk away from the Sunnyside. The stylish, beautifully decorated venue is owned and run by Executive Chef Edgar Yonga. The steaks are cooked in a charcoal oven, which can reach heats of up to 400 degrees. At the time of writing, they are running a promotion Every Thursday, 4:00-9:00 pm 2 stakes and bottle of wine £30.00. Reservations can be made through their website or over the phone on 01704 53074. Thai Food
Thai Rice is located just across the road and is the closest restaurant to the Sunnyside on this list. Thai Rice is an authentic Thai Restaurant. The staff here are always very friendly and we enjoy the food. Our favourite dishes are the Thai Green Curry and Mussaman Curry. The restaurant is closed on a Tuesday. Fine Dining
Twelve Fusion Kitchen is located on Princes Street, just off East Bank Street which is just over a 10-minute walk away from the Sunnyside. The Owner and Chef Paulo only uses high quality fresh, carefully sourced, seasonal ingredients in his dishes. The dishes are not defined by any particular area or region but are influenced by experiences and tastes from Paulo’s many years working in various countries. Eateries catering for diners with allergens and intolerances
Dale Cafe situated just a brief 10-minute stroll from Sunnyside on Tulketh Street, is renowned for its delectable homemade gluten-free cakes. The menu prominently highlights the gluten-free choices, and it’s reassuring to know that the owner is a fellow celiac, ensuring a deep understanding of dietary needs. Occulo Lounge conveniently located on Lord Street, is a mere 5-minute walk away and offers a dedicated Gluten-Free menu. Their website features interactive tools designed to assist patrons in customizing their dining experience to suit their individual dietary needs. Xanders Chip Shop is located on East Bank Street, approximately a 10-minute walk from Sunnyside. This establishment offers both dine-in and takeaway choices. They are not gluten-free by default so please make staff aware of your dietary requirements when ordering. They are open 7 days a week. Vegan Eateries
Wild Root is an entirely plant-based establishment encompassing a café, deli, and event space, complete with an onsite farm shop. They are the only 100% plant-based establishment in the area and it requires a 12-minute car journey to travel there from the Sunnyside. They make a wide range of homemade meals with plants at the centre of every dish. Wild Root enjoys a stellar reputation on review platforms and is open 7 days a week, closing at 5:00 p.m. daily, except on Sundays, when they close at 4 pm. Telephone 01704 562002
Kalash Indian is located at the top end of Lord Street, approximately 15-minutes walk away. They pride themselves on creating high quality food made using fresh ingredients and spices. Gusto Trattoria is located on Lord Street, around a 12-minute walk from the Sunnyside. The restaurant which opened to the public in 2005 offers modern-style Italian cuisine in a contemporary, relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is highly rated amongst the vegan community in Southport. House of Ivy is located on Lord Street just over a 5-minute walk away from the Sunnyside.
